Swimming is a great complement to a great fitness regimen.

Our bodies won’t take the impact of the pounding from running or even cycling. Our joints usually thank us in the end. However, we can still enjoy an effective form of exercise and have fun in the water. Swimming laps, for example, is a great way to burn calories. It doesn’t matter where you do it, but you want to be able to track your laps and speed.

To help you track your swimming workout, I’ve created a list of the best lap counters for pool laps and other swimming metrics.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do you keep track of laps when swimming?

Most pools have a small border of the bottom painted a solid color for lap times, but not all pools actually use this as part of the official lap count. If you want to ensure you have an accurate count of your laps, then you need a way to determine how far youʼve gone and how far you still have to go.

This is accomplished with a swim counter. Swim counters measure distances in both standard and metric units. There are a variety of ways to use swim counters, such as dangling it from a lanyard around your neck and having it count the laps as you swim them. For swimmers who are already using the same stroke with the same lap length, the swim counter can be used to count repetitions. Swimmers can train by trying to reach a certain number of repetitions with the same number of laps, thus improving their endurance.

What is the best swim lap counter?

We like the device for its versatility and durability.

The lap counter strap can be easily attached to a pool noodle or kickboard, or it can be attached to the kickboard and then to a pool noodle to make the length of the pool counter longer. If you’re swimming in a public pool, it’s easy to detach the counter and take it with you. Remember that it will not work in a chlorinated pool, but if you are swimming in a pool that hasn’t been treated with any chemicals (such as a community pool that is in the process of being filled or brought back online after a winter), it works just fine.

How many laps is a good swim workout?

Every workout is different, but one of the most important things you need to know is what the goal of swimming is. In the mind of a triathlete or swimmer, swimming is considered a foundation workout, a workout focused on technique and overall fitness. In a foundation workout, a goal is to swim all of the workout without having to stop and rest. This will help you feel confident in your ability to make it through an endurance race without stopping.

Does fitbit track swimming laps?

The Fitbit platform is a bit of a mixed bag.

Their heart rate trackers are pretty much excellent and track sleep exceptionally well. But their step trackers and GPS watches leave a lot to be desired.

Most popular Fitbit models do not track swimming. They simply aren’t built for diving and swimming laps.

But, a few units do have swimming features built into them. It’s a little hard to track specific laps and times with the units, but they can at least let you know how much time you spent in the water during a workout, and that’s an improvement over their standard trackers.

If you want an activity watch that can do both heart rate monitoring and swimming pool laps, you will have to look at special fitness units designed specifically for swimming laps, like the Garmin Swim and the Swimovate FUSION OS.

If you’re looking for an affordable but reliable multi-lap counter, we can easily recommend the Barracuda. It gives you a clear view of your laps and loads very slowly. It also works well in shallow water and at a good price. However, if you’re not picky and just want an entry-level system to record your laps, the Finis is the one for you.
