“There’s a Better and Smarter Way to Train and Race…”
I believe the easiest way to explain my approach to mental training is to compare it to a typical race car driver training program. Let’s say, for example, that you’re playing the role of the race car driver (we’ll call you Mario, if that’s okay). To win a race, Mario will spend countless hours at the track, behind the wheel of the car, honing his driving skills. His practice sessions will be long and grueling. He’ll be pushed to his limits. The better he gets, the harder he’ll work.
But then, once it’s time to race, what happens? Mario comes in to the actual competition and completely turns around everything he’s been working on for weeks and months. He’s suddenly slower and less focused than ever. He’s tight and nervous.
We’ve all seen this and usually find ourselves scratching our heads afterwards wondering why the athlete was so different in the competition than what we had seen in practice.
What Mario was doing on the track, miles and weeks away from the competition, wasn’t enough!
“Finally…Mental Training for Swimmers Made Simple…”
The 17 year old got up off the blue mat, flipped the rope over the lifeguard stand, and began jogging in place. He was warming up for a 15 minute swim workout. As he was warming up, I approached him and asked him if he would be able to listen to me for a few quick minutes.
As we walked under the lifeguard stand, he told me that he was nervous about the upcoming swim meet. He said that every time he’d swim in the four previous meets, he’d finish at the bottom of the standings. On top of that, his coach had already told him that he was going to be put on a different relay for this meet because his times weren’t fast enough.
At this point, you can probably sense the real problem. This young man felt that he was part of the ‘bottom of the standings’ at every swim meet. It was important for him to know and believe that he was capable of performing at a higher level, but he just couldn’t see that.
“Here’s How Conquer the Pool Will Help You Swim Like Your Hair is on Fire…”
If you swim laps for fitness, what do you want most?
To go faster…to last longer…to have more control on each stroke…to strengthen your muscles so you’re faster and stronger, right?
You might think that’s impossible and that it’s just something you have to work for forever. There are tons of books on swimming that promise to give you the help you’re looking for, but by now you’ve probably found that they don’t work that way.
In fact, you’ve probably found that that all books on swimming have the same problem…you can’t get results because all those books are designed around the needs of the author, not you. They’re usually long and full of charts and tables that not only make it impossible to quickly find what you’re looking for, but they also give you way more information than you need.
Unless you’re a coach, you’re looking for simple ideas, exercises, and drills that you can use while you’re swimming to get faster, have better control, and get more endurance.

PART 1: Goal Setting
How’s your goal setting coming along? In the last Mental Training Minute, I gave you some suggestions on how to set goals for yourself for this season. Did you get them all on paper?
No worries. Just like swimming, it takes practice — and commitment!
Set New Short Term Goals
If you’ve been practicing setting goals for a couple of years, you’ve probably gotten a pretty good system going. But even a tried and true goal-setting process can use some tweaking occasionally for maximum effectiveness.
Every year, I update my goal-setting system, and this year is no different. My current process works like a charm, so I’m going to share it with you. Here’s what my goal-setting worksheet looks like:

{1}. Goals are specific, quantifiable and measurable.
{2}. List your top three seasonal goals from least to most important.
{3}. List three personal goals (i.e., sleep and nutrition, training time, etc)
{4}. List three short-term goals for Month 1:
- a) ______________________________________________
- b) ______________________________________________
- c) ______________________________________________

PART 2: Practice
Practice, Practice!
But which mental exercises should you actually spend your time on? Well, first and foremost, improve your breathing. This is the most primal, natural way to control your mental focus. And breathing is also a gateway to other ways of controlling your focusing, such as meditation.
Secondly, remember to be in the moment. This is to avoid over analyzing your swim and over analyzing your technique. Don’t get caught up in long-term strategies when you are in the pool. Swim your race, enjoy yourself in the process, and learn from it. Once you get out of the pool, then you can spend time analyzing it.
Thirdly, focus on the line. It’s easy for your mind to wander, and many swimmers fall into the trap of getting distracted from the line right in front of them. Stay focused. Watch the line closely.
And fourthly, practice visualization. This can involve imagining what your training will be like. You can visualize a very successful swim. Instead of focusing on your surroundings, just daydream about how you want your race to go.

PART 3: Racing
Racing is one of the final stepping stones in your ability to perform under pressure.
If you are a high school or college swimmer, you may be required to compete in races to earn a varsity letter and to prepare yourself physically and mentally for the collegiate level.
If you are a beginner triathlete, you may be getting ready to compete in your first sprint or Olympic distance triathlon in your local area.
Regardless of your swimming level, there are a few ways you can prepare yourself to have a positive experience on and off the lanes.
The more practice you have in a race setting, the more demanding it will feel. I remember my first varsity race in college; it was against some of the top teams in the nation and I wasn’t even the top swimmer on my own team. My nerves were on edge until I hit the water, then I transformed from a nervous wreck to an ice-cold competitor. I had prepared myself for the meet by practicing races and feeling that pressure. It made the race seem like regular practice.
FAQ
What are the benefits of the beach visualization technique?
The beach visualization technique is the most effective and proven method for engaging the mind’s motor pathways. The mind’s motor pathways connect the brain’s processing centers and the body’s muscles.
When performers during the recent Olympic Olympics used the technique, they felt almost as if they were physically practicing in the water. Their bodies were in a peak state of readiness for the actual meet.
Also, when they used this method, they were able to access support from their own unconscious minds. This essential element is necessary when seeking peak performance.
Do you do team orders? Bulk discounts?
Yes! When you place an order for 4 or more posters, there are a few discounts you can take advantage of:
- Pick 5 posters and get an additional one for free:
- Remember: this discount is only available when you order a complete set of FIVE POSTERS, which is 5 different posters in one order.
- Pick 3 and get 2 more for free:
- Remember: this discount is only available when you order COMPLETE SETS of 3 POSTERS, which is 3 different posters in one order.
For example, if you order 3 posters, each with 2 copies, you will save 20%.
You can use these discounts to further build your poster library or integrate them into your poster training sessions.
But, as always, remember that it’s definitely more cost effective to order more posters at a time.
So, if you have an absolutely huge team, let us know how many posters you need and we can give you a custom bulk discount.
Is this just a 292-page listicle on how to get motivated?
No, not quite. There’s actually a whole lot of science and research backing up the methods in this book. (I may have been asleep during half my classes in college, but I do know how to conduct research when I need to.)
After years of studying and refining my own mental training method, I took it upon myself to learn about the science behind the practice itself. I was specifically interested in what a person could do to reprogram a negative, self-defeating mind to a positive, self-believing mind when they’re in the zone.
I used to swim 1,600 meters in 25 minutes. Ten years later, I swam 1,600 in 15 minutes. This was in spite of the fact that my training time was cut in half. I didn’t get faster naturally through magical genetics and my biceps didn’t just get bigger. I got faster with the help of a mental training game changer.
This book is the deconstructed process of how to implement and use a tried and true mental training strategy season after season.
Am I going to need to be a space scientist to understand all this stuff?
No way! Brain Training is a very practical method of training for you, and is based on cutting edge neuroscience and psychology. It’s a step-by-step process, and each step gives you great practical benefits.
The first thing it will do is to build up your confidence as a swimmer. I have helped hundreds of swimming athletes get to the top of their games, and it’s not just about making you a faster freestyler or finer tactican. The methods strip away any doubt you may have about your ability, and boost your mental fortitude so you can go further than you thought you could.
This confidence boost is a great reward, but it’s not the main reason you should do the exercises. In fact, after you’ve done a few of the exercises, you’ll find that the best reward is what happens to your mind. This next part is just for you, the pure fun part.
It’s good to get in touch with lots of different people, and talk to lots of different people. But what is genuinely exciting is not just the diversity of the people you meet, but the diversity of the views, ideas and personalities you meet on your journey.
Are there any extras?
This book is perfect for the diver looking to hone their mental game and develop a powerful understanding of their inner self and the connection between mind and body of the sport.
The swimming drills can be done before you leave your apartment or after you get to the pool.
Although you can take the techniques and apply them in your own life outside the pool, it’s my experience that the real magic happens when you start to apply them in your swim.
What I love about this book is that it provides specific examples of real to real situations, real situations of which you have experienced, or you will experience. Mental training can be very scientific and hard to grasp. Paying attention to your thoughts and understanding the why of why you performed the way you did in a race is sometimes difficult for most athletes.
The writing is eloquent, and the examples are easy to follow. And best of all, the concepts are tied to swimming, so you can believe that they will work for you.
Who is this book for?
If you’re a swimmer who’s serious about your swimming, you’ll love this book. I created it specifically for swimmers who want to improve their performance, not for beginners who want to learn how to swim. I know first hand how frustrating it is to be placed in beginner swim lessons when you already have years of experience.
If you’re already a proficient swimmer, then you know a lot of the swimming basics. But there’s a big difference between a basic swimmer and a high-performance swimmer. The key to becoming a high-performance swimmer is a mental approach to swimming. Today, many elite swimmers are using mental training to push through the pain and become the best. And now you can too.
When will I get my copy?
What makes this program different?
In the past, low-tech books have offered a wide range of mental training techniques for swimmers. This is pro-oriented book, however, is different because it’s centered on a proven, results-oriented process.
As an author of a program that’s been helping swimmers for years, I’ve spoken with the best and brightest swimmers and their coaches over the years. I’ve learned from the best and arrived at a simple plan that’s easy to follow but gets results.
Every one of us struggles with motivation. You may have just read countless books on the subject, or you may have spent years with a coach, but the fact is, none of those things will help you if you can’t do what needs to be done. I can help.
Get your hands on this program before it becomes a widely discussed, best-selling book.
Alrighty then…how much is this book of saucy awesomeness?
Does it Come With a Money Back Guarantee?
No, Dr. Clarke does not include a money back guarantee with his materials. Instead, he states that if his materials are ever found to be faulty or of less than high quality then he will provide a free replacement.
The reason for this is that Dr. Clarke is working with the best coaches, sports professionals, and authors in the field. He has had access to the very best, which accounts for the quality of content in his materials.
If he did include a money back guarantee, it would require the coaches and professionals that he works with to work for free and not be paid for the ideas, concepts, and work they do to come up with top quality courses that can be duplicated by anyone. This is not fair to them.
However, Dr. Clarke works with only the highest quality individuals and he is there to ensure that the customer gets the best possible materials. If any of these professionals do fail to deliver with their part of the deal and leave the buyer with less than expected content, then Dr. Clarke will always be there to make things right.
